Which Watch to Wear

New Years Eve is one of those big timing moments that should be an important event for watch lovers. Which watch will you be wearing when the clock strikes midnight? One watch that I've always thought would be perfect on New Years Eve is a good perpetual calendar with year indication like this IWC DaVinci:

At that moment when the confetti is falling around you, all those magical gears inside this complicated movement will advance the date hand at 3 o'clock, the day hand at 9 o'clock, the month hand at 6 o'clock and the 4-digit year indicator to 2006. Plus this watch is a ratrapante chronograph so you could also be simultaneously timing that New Year's kiss.

From everyone at Gray & Sons we wish you all a happy & healthy New Year!

Forbes list of most expensive watches

If there is one thing that the people at Forbes Magazine like to do it is making lists - lists that involve large sums of money. This time they've listed the world's most expensive watches for 2005 (meaning produced this year - not auctioned watches). Topping the list is the Vacheron Constantin Tour de l'Ile which was produced to celebrate Vacheron's 250th Anniversary. This highly complicated timepiece (Tourbillon, Perpetual Calendar, Power Reserve, Sunrise/Sunset, skychart etc etc etc) has a price tag of $1,500,000.

Watch Wallpapers

There's a lack of good watch-themed wallpapers for your computer desktop out there on the web so I've made some of my own from watches we have taken pictures of over the last year or so. Just click on the picture below and then right click on the large image that appears to set the picture to your desktop image. Check back often, I'll keep adding more as I have time.

Orbita's Tourbillon Watchwinder

Don't be confused here. Orbita's new Futura Tourbillon watch winder is not a watchwinder for tourbillon watches. . . rather it is a tourbillon itself (or uses the tourbillon model to wind a watch more accurately). Confused yet? Here's Orbita's explanation:
Keep your watch in a winder for an extended period and it loses accuracy. Why? For the same reason that Breguet invented the Tourbillon watch mechanism in the days when pocket watches were in vogue. . . to negate the adverse effects of gravity when a watch remains in a fixed position. Our new FUTURA TOURBILLON winder constantly indexes the rest position of the watch so that gravity effects are canceled out. Digital displays of turns per day and actual time in a futuristic crystal glass framework. The future is now!
